Monday we left the Golden Nugget RV Park in Anchorage and headed toward Seward. Our first stop was at the Crow Creek Mine. A very fun little place. It is a mine that has been owned by the same family for many years, they still mine the creek a bit but mostly they operate it as a tourist attraction where you can pay to “work the creek” and pan gold. They also have several of the original buildings that you can walk through. Their biggest revenue is weddings and events in the summer. In the winter, the family works other jobs nearby.
Next stop – Girdwood, Alaksa. Girdwood is a ski town that reminded me a lot of the ski towns I know in Colorado. We stopped at the Chair 5 Restaurant for lunch. We ate Halibut again!
After Girdwood we turned off the main road for 16 miles to vist a small town called Hope – Population 150. What a beautiful place! We went to a small Art Gallery, the owner told us a lot about the history of the area, she lives there year round. Dave found a fish print which I got him for his birthay. It is truly a Fish-Print. The fish was caught in Coopers Landing, Alaska. They put paint on the fish and use it to make a print on paper which is then turned into a painting. He also bought a small watercolor of the Hope Café which we later drove by and took a picture of. This is the only place where the sun came out….
As we got closer to Seward the weather got worse. Gray, rain and wind. UGH. We went into Seward, checked in with the company that we have a reservation with tomorrow to take a boat trip to Kenai Fjords National Park. They told us that the weather was too bad today for the trip and that it looks the same for tomorrow…. So we may have to juggle our plans a bit. We also made reservations for Dave’s Birthday Dinner at Ray’s Waterfront (not associated with the Boathouse in Seattle). The only time available was at 8:30pm – Geesh! That is my bedtime! But it is his birthday….. so off we go to dinner at Ray’s.
